Grace Green Puts One Girl in a New Impossible Situation Every Week and Makes Fragility Look Beautiful

Grace Green is an artist based in Lecce, in southern Italy. She makes surreal images of one recurring girl in impossible, emotionally charged situations.

She paints the same girl over and over, and every time something impossible is happening to her. She walks a tightrope, stands in front of a vending machine, or drags along a shadow on a leash. She has a black bob, blunt bangs, blue eyes and freckles. The surface looks thick and slightly waxy, like oil paint that hasn’t quite dried.

Feelings are her subject. Grace turns anxiety, tenderness and the heavy things people carry inside into strange little scenes that are easy to recognize. Her series Emotional Baggage is about exactly that. Some of her pieces speak for children who can’t explain what they feel, and give those feelings a safe place to be seen.

She works from southern Italy and mixes collage, photomanipulation and digital painting. In recent years she has added AI to her process. Her own line about her work is that she makes beauty out of her fragilities.
