Thomas Albdorf Makes Still Life Feel Like Contemporary Science Fiction, One Ordinary Object at a Time

Thomas Albdorf, an Austrian artist and photographer whose deceptively simple still lifes, object studies, and sculptural images explore how easily photography can make reality feel unstable. A tomato may appear to change over time, an egg may float above a spoon, or ordinary material fragments may become an impossible spatial arrangement — all using a mixture of physical staging, scanning, digital manipulation, and occasional AI experiments.

Albdorf was born in Linz in 1982 and lives and works in Vienna. He was named one of the British Journal of Photography’s international “Artists to Watch” in 2014 and won the UNSEEN Amsterdam Talent Award in 2016. His institutional solo shows include Room With a View at FOAM Amsterdam in 2018 and Mirror Mirror at Museum Folkwang in Essen in 2019; in 2024, he received Austria’s State Scholarship for Fine Art Photography.

Alongside his fine-art practice, he works across art, fashion, and commercial photography for clients including Apple, Adidas, Nike, Balenciaga, Byredo, Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton, Sol de Janeiro, and Vöslauer. His commercial work carries the same conceptual precision: everyday products and materials are made to feel strange enough that the viewer pauses to reconsider what an image is telling them.
