On today’s A Portfolio, we hang out in Vienna for another minute and look at the works of Hubert Schmalix. The artist was born in Graz, Austria but based in Vienna and Los Angeles. The works may look like graphic design, but they are oil paintings, clean and without fuss. “I’m not a painter who paints the light. I create light through colour. This is what defines painting,” says Schmalix. “One could also say I produce a light that does not exist in reality.”
