Laurie Lipton, a New York native, has been expressing herself through the medium of drawing since she was four years old. She made history as the first individual to graduate with a Fine Arts Degree in Drawing (with honors) from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pennsylvania. After spending 36 years living in various countries across Europe, including Holland, Belgium, Germany, France, and London, she has recently returned to her home country, the USA.

Lipton’s work, which has been showcased extensively throughout Europe and the USA, draws inspiration from the religious paintings of the Flemish School. Despite her attempts to emulate the style of the 16th century Dutch Masters, she found herself developing a unique drawing technique. As a student traveling across Europe, she began to build up tone with thousands of fine cross-hatching lines, reminiscent of an egg tempera painting.
Her acknowledges that her method of drawing is “insane,” but believes that the resulting detail and luminosity justify the effort. She notes that her drawings often take longer to create than a painting of equal size and detail.
