Jan Smithers, the former American actress, first gained national attention as a teenager when she appeared on the cover of Newsweek in March 1966, perched on the back of a motorcycle. The cover story catapulted her into the spotlight, leading to offers from Hollywood agents eager to work with the young star.

Smithers became a household name for her portrayal of Bailey Quarters on the beloved CBS sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati from 1978 to 1982. Her talent and beauty made her a fan favorite, and her performance helped make the show a classic of American television.

Throughout her life, Smithers has had her share of ups and downs, including two marriages – one to Kipp Whitman from 1971 to 1972, and the other to actor James Brolin from 1986 to 1995. After living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, for some time, she now resides in Ojai, California.

In June 2014, Smithers was reunited with surviving cast members of WKRP in Cincinnati at a special event hosted by the Paley Center for Media. The reunion was a reminder of the impact that the show had on American television, and of Smithers’ enduring legacy as a talented and unforgettable actress.
